Cozy Skirts, Classy Nails, and a Little Holiday Sparkle

Hi Reader,

There's a moment every fall when the air finally turns crisp, and the first thing I want is a sweater. The soft, familiar kind that feels like a hug from an old friend.

This year, that cozy feeling led me somewhere I didn't expect to go: skirts.

I'll be honest. Skirts have never really been my thing. I've been loyal to my pants for most of my life, the way some of us are loyal to our hairdresser. But the more I looked at skirt and sweater outfits this season, the more I understood the appeal. They're warm and comfortable, and they carry a quiet sense of occasion that makes an ordinary weekday feel a little brighter.

It's not about dressing up for an event; it's about letting everyday feel a bit more special.

In this week's post, I'm sharing outfit ideas for every kind of fall day. You'll find long skirts with chunky knits for the coziest mornings, denim skirts for errands and coffee dates, and midi skirts that look polished without any extra effort.

I've also included ideas for Thanksgiving and Christmas, because the holidays deserve outfits that feel festive and still let you enjoy that second slice of pie.

Whether skirts are already a favorite or, like me, you've mostly admired them from a distance, I think you'll find something here worth trying.

And, because the holidays are just around the corner, I've also shared a new post on simple, classy holiday nails.

Holiday nails don't have to be long, loud, or complicated to feel festive. A classic red, a deep evergreen, a whisper of shimmer, or even a glitter top coat over your everyday color can make your hands feel ready for the season.

I've included ideas for short nails, like mine, subtle options for women who prefer a quieter sparkle, and a few press-on picks that have come a long way. There's also a little hand pampering to help everything look its best before the parties begin.

It's a small touch of sparkle, and sometimes that's all we need to feel festive.

Welcome to The Reference Shelf, a new corner of the newsletter for my more guidebook-style pieces. They sound a bit different from my usual writing, but they come from the same place, a genuine wish to give you something useful.

That's all for this week, my friend. Stay safe, be well, pray for peace.

Hello Reader, Most mornings, my body speaks up before I do. A stiff knee, a shoulder with opinions, a small reminder that I’m 71 and counting. For a long time I treated those mornings as something to manage. Lately I’ve treated them as something to answer, with a quiet promise that I am worthy, I am loved, and this naturally aging body is exactly what it’s supposed to be. This week’s post is about aging gracefully, but not the serene, composed version we were all handed. It’s about what grace...

Hi Reader, I used to think healthy aging meant adding more to my plate. More rules, more routines, more things to remember before I'd even had my coffee. It took me a while to realize the habits that actually stuck were the quiet ones, the ones I barely had to think about anymore. This week's post walks through the handful that have earned a permanent place in my life, from how I move my body to the one habit nobody ever puts on these lists. If you've been easing into October self-care the...

Hello Reader, A friend took a candid photo of me last spring, one of those didn't-know-she-was-snapping-it shots. I caught myself in it a few days later, scrolling through my phone, and had this strange half-second where I almost didn't recognize the woman looking back. Not because she looked bad. Because my first instinct, embarrassingly, was to wonder if she looked frumpy. That word has a way of sneaking up on us, doesn't it? It's not really about age. It's this quiet worry that somewhere...
